Diving and snorkeling in Koh Lipe

Diving or snorkeling in Koh Lipe is a must if we like the sea and we are spending holidays in Thailand.

Koh Lipe

Maybe it is not one of the best known places to practice these sports because if we talk about diving or snorkeling, Koh Tao probably comes to mind.

However, if we have enough time to travel to Koh Lipe, it is highly recommended to drop by this island of the Andaman Sea.

HOW TO GET TO KOH LIPE?

In high season it is usually very busy as the access to this island is easier. During the high season we can reach Koh Lipe from points such as Krabi, Phi Phi islands, Phuket or Koh Lanta.

In contrast, in low season this is not possible due to the state of the sea. If we want to get to Koh Lipe during the months between May to October we will have to make a trip by land to the port of Pak Bara, where we will embark on a speed boat to Koh Lipe in a journey of just under 2 hours if the sea conditions they're good.

To get to Pak Bara we can move in mini van or flight to Hat Yai airport.

KOH LIPE ISLAND

Koh Lipe is part of a small archipelago of islands. This island has 4 square kilometers and 3 beaches:

  • Sunset beach: Located north of the island, the quietest but with spectacular sunsets.

  • Pattaya beach: To the south we find this beach with a lot of atmosphere.

  • Sunrise beach: In low season the boats arrive at this beach instead of Pattaya beach. In front of this beach we can go to the small island of Ko Kra in kayak to snorkel.

DISPLACEMENTS

On this island we will not need to rent a motorbike, we can go on foot everywhere and if we are tired we can take a taxi for 50 bath per person. The price is fixed to go anywhere on the island.

ACCOMODATION

In low season we should not worry about the accommodation, although in high season you have to be proactive and take everything booked.

Being such a small island, there is not much accommodation available, which means that prices rise in high season.

WHAT TO DO IN KOH LIPE?

Apart from snorkeling and diving on this island, Koh Lipe offers a good variety of activities, so if we spend a few days on this island we will not have time to get bored.

After a morning of snorkeling or diving we can go to eat something in the famous Walking Street, the central street of the island and where the majority of bars, restaurants and shops are concentrated.

In the afternoon we can rest in one of its beaches, continue practicing snorkeling or take an excursion in one of the Long Tail Boats guided by the Chao Ley who live on the island.

Of course it is mandatory to spend some of your sunsets in Sunset Beach.

At night we can take a walk along the Walking Street, have a drink in one of its bars or go to any of the bars that are on the beach and where there is usually enough atmosphere.

SNORKELING AND DIVING IN KOH LIPE

The first thing we have to bear in mind, is that in the low season we will not be able to dive in the natural park of Tarutao, which can be an inconvenience. However we have many options for diving outside the natural park, with spectacular diving spots. Basically in the low season we have the whole east part, while the natural park is located to the west, around the island of Dong.

Just in front of Sunrise beach we have Koh kra, Ko Usen and a little further koh Talak, where if there is good visibility it can be one of the best dives we can do.

If we choose to snorkel we can hire excursions in the diving centers, and even in some hotels where we can rent a kayak we can go on our own to the island of Koh Kra (where there is a small beach to leave the kayak) or Koh Usen and snorkel on our own.

There are many diving centers where they can advise us depending on the season and the sea conditions, since the tides in this area are very important for diving and we should not forget the currents either.

Simply put your head under the water with the snorkel and we can see a lot of coral, some turtle if we are lucky, coral fish, needlefish, barracudas and all kinds of fish that live at shallow depths.

If we choose to dive, we will be able to see huge banks of riflemen, catfish, a lot of lionfish, nudibranchs, clown fish, box fish, puffer fish and maybe some shark.

If you have questions about how to get there, stay or how to organize your stay and activities in Koh Lipe do not hesitate to leave your comment and we will try to solve all your doubts so that your trip to this island is unforgettable.
